THE QUEEN MOTHER (1 x 120 mins, Channel 4)

The Queen Mother is the iconic royal figure of the 20th century: the grandmother of a nation. In this film we rediscover the Queen Mother as a young woman, the dazzling Elizabeth Bowes Lyons. As a debutante she won hearts, broke hearts and possibly was the sweetheart of more than one royal prince.
Elizabeth Bowes Lyons almost didn’t marry the future George VI, turning him down at least twice - possibly because she was holding out for the bigger prize - his elder brother the future Edward VIII.

Edward VIII’s infatuation with Wallis Simpson led to the inevitable conclusion of abdication. Elizabeth and her husband were thrown into centre stage. Despite the ease to which Elizabeth took to her new job as Queen she never forgave Mrs. Simpson. Why not? Was it because she resented what it did to the monarchy or because Wallis had won the heart of the one man she couldn’t?

This documentary tells the story of the myriad of twists and turns on the journey to our Queen Mother’s coronation in 1937.
